When I bought my home, I was excited to have a separate dining room to host gatherings of friends and family! I knew I wanted to have a table to seat at least 8 and plenty of storage to house the evidence of my dish and glassware obsession.
Originally, the little built-in hutch area was a closet with sliding doors. I'm almost certain that the current dining room was initially a bedroom in this house plan. I knew that closet with sliding doors wouldn't cut it in my home, and I really wanted a wet bar. However, I compromised with the built-in shelves and storage. I mimicked the kitchen with the design (more of the kitchen later), and I used the same subway tile, cabinet color and countertop. It's still a work in progress. I plan to add lighting to it at some point. Everything you see styled on the shelves are heirloom pieces from my mama and grandmothers and my Southern Living at Home Gallery Collection serving pieces (discontinued).
Another way that I updated the room was to change out the light fixture above the table. When I bought the home, there was a cute farmhouse basket fixture, but it did not offer enough light for the room or match my updated Southern traditional style. I found this one on Wayfair, and it offers exactly what I envisioned.
For the table and chairs, I wanted to be budget friendly. I found everything I needed from Wayfair, Pier1 and Walmart! While the exact items I purchased are no longer available, I have linked similar pieces in the sources below. I love how it turned out, but I am always searching for the perfect antique dining table. When I find the right one, I will most likely sell this set-up.
For now, though, the dining room is one of my favorite and most-used rooms in my home.
